The Plentiful Pillars

These are the values that make Plentiful what it is today.

#1 Eat Well
Give your body the nutrients it needs from a diversity of organic, seasonal fruit and veg and grocery products made with raw, wholesome, ultra-simple ingredients.

#2 Planet-First
We look after the environment we rely on for nutritious and delicious food by using local suppliers first, reusing our boxes, never using air freight and other practices that have a net positive impact on the planet.

#3 Better Farming
We support biodiverse, natural and fair-wage farming and ethical food production because of the long-term benefits for everyone. You won’t find any slavery on our shelves.

#4 Choice
People deserve to choose the kind of food they consume and products they use, shopping according to their values, not just what’s available. For too long, supermarkets have been the only option. Our aim is to disrupt this pattern for the good.

Hi, I’m Abbie, the dual-tone haired (it’s my personal brand now) and animal-loving (you can follow my pup Bucky on Instagram!) founder of Plentiful.

When I’m not at our health food store in Ramsbottom, you can bet I’m doing one of two things. One, on a walk, immersing myself in nature. I'm a big bird nerd so if I didn't have a giant (nearly 12 months old now) mastiff on the end of the lead I'd be sat with my binoculars or listening to skylarks. Two, trying out different recipes. I’m a big foodie so you can trust that the recipes we share for inspo have my personal seal of approval.

My love for food is a big part of the Plentiful journey. Knowing where food comes from, what chemicals in it do what, how our guts affect almost every function in the body, and how eating for nutrition can literally change your thoughts and feelings has changed my life. I nourish my body first by eating real honest produce, fibre, wholefoods and fermented foods. I get to help others do the same through Plentiful. It's all a learning curve and I'm about doing what we can, with what we've got.

But did you know that Plentiful didn’t start as a health food shop?

The Plentiful Story...

From one of the first plastic-free shops in the UK…

Before Plentiful there was Fulfilled. I’ll try to make a long story short. I have a background that’s perfect for a nature lover. I studied Conservation Biology & Ecology at university, worked on the dolphin boats in Wales, got a job at Faith In Nature (who we sell now!) and worked for the RSPB at a nature reserve in Yorkshire. I was all about a career in educating people about why nature needs help. A net positive impact on the planet.

Being surrounded by other people who cared about the planet and learning of the damage been done to British wildlife sparked my desire to make a change. But the real turning point was on holiday. I visited the Cape Verde Islands and upon a last minute booked wildlife safari, saw how destroyed they were due to plastic pollution from Europe. The hidden beaches were piled up with litter washed in from the boats and other shores.

Then and there I decided I wanted to open the first 100% plastic-free shop in the UK (we ended up 1st in the North West and 5th or 6th in the UK but who's counting). That’s how Fulfilled came to be in 2018.

…To a one-stop ethical health food shop

As I learned about the health benefits of natural wholefoods, I saw the crossover between sustainability and healthy eating. I committed to making organic the norm, being part of creating a world where crops aren't sprayed with Round Up, people are paid a fair wage, our soil is cared for, and nature can live alongside biodynamic farms and in habitats created by farmers.

Fulfilled, a plastic-free shop, became Plentiful Wholefoods, a one-stop ethical health food shop, helping our community buy better, eat better and feel better. We went from selling everything plastic-free to everything organic, ethical and sustainable.

During this change, we also had a change of location. We went from a tiny shop in a converted terraced house to a much bigger shop in the centre of Ramsbottom thanks to a Crowdfunder supported by the amazing community we had built in Bury, Rossendale and the rest of the UK (due to endless news coverage!) Then in 2020 came Plentiful Doorstep for online ordering and our veg box scheme, delivering proper good groceries at the click of a button.

Watch out T*sco.

What about the organic veg boxes?

Our veg box scheme began in 2020, when we had a pallet of fruit and veg at our door, but wanted to protect our customers from the pandemic. The boxes were insanely popular, and took over the first floor of the shop. Since, we've grown our own veg box team, created the new site to make an easy and flexible shopping experience, and we have huge plans for bringing Plentiful Doorstep to everyone in the area. We believe in organic, and we believe in people wanting to make the best choices.

We personally inspect each item that comes to us from our certified organic suppliers, and pack each box on site. We deliver straight to your door with all your extras, or keep them chilled in store for your to collect on your next weekly shop. The aim is to upsize our premises in the next 12 months, and really bring Plentiful to all of Bury and Rossendale.

We started as being concerned about plastic, but caring for the planet goes so much further beyond that. We want to make organic the norm - where crops aren't sprayed with Round Up, where people are paid a fair wage, our soil is cared for, and nature can live alongside biodynamic farms and in habitats created by farmers.

We want to bring healthy, nutrient dense, natural wholefoods to everyone, where we don't have to worry about what is on or in our food.

It’s been quite the journey but here we are with a thriving Plentiful community. The Plentiful Wholefoods store is busier than ever. The number of orders from Plentiful Doorstep, our online health food store, is constantly growing. And we’ve been able to do it all while prioritising ethics, sustainability and health.
